Autistic girl with DiGeorge Syndrome memorized Coppelia Ballet

The background story: We knew Clara loved the Coppelia ballet, but little did we know she memorized the whole thing! She performed this solely from memory! This is just a small snippet of her dancing to it. We would see her doing some ballet moves around the house thinking it was ballet moves she learnt in ballet class, till one day someone decided to whip out a computer and compare her moves to that of the Coppelia ballerina, and, VOILA, we realized she memorized it, and can dance it! Clara has been diagnosed with DiGeorge Syndrome and Autism. She spent her first 16 months in hospital, has gone through multiple surgeries since she was two weeks due to the complications with her syndrome. Before she was two, we noticed that she had difficulty connecting with people, was in a world of her own, and two years later she was also diagnosed with autism. Clara also had a lot of physical complications, and could not walk till she was four. She never spoke until she was six. Doctors told us when she was born to forget about her – we could just have another baby…but we couldn’t give up. Never underestimate your child’s potential!

Katy Perry with Jodi DiPiazza (Autistic girl) Sing at Night of Too Many Stars

Background story: Jodi was lucky enough to get into one of the few schools available to help her reach her potential. Please help us give many more kids and adults with autism the same chance Jodi got. Katy Perry and Jodi DiPiazza sang “Firework” at the Beacon Theater in New York on Oct 13. “Night of Too Many Stars: America Comes Together for Autism Programs” is hosted by Jon Stewart and raises money with NYCA (New York Collaborates for Autism) to support and create autism programs, schools, and services all over the country.

Autistic Girl Expresses Unimaginable Intelligence

Background story: This amazing girl proves autism is not what most doctors and everyone else think it is. For educational purposes only, I do not own this content.

Asperger’s Disorder, and Other Common Misdiagnoses and Dual Diagnoses of Gifted Children

Background story: Many gifted children are incorrectly diagnosed as having emotional disorders. Other diagnoses are actually more common among gifted children, but are often overlooked. Because few psychologists, pediatricians, or other health care professionals receive training about gifted children, this session offers information about characteristics of gifted children, frequent issues that arise, and guidelines to distinguish whether a childis simply showing gifted behaviors or suffers from disorders such as ADHD or Asperger’s Disorder. Because some disorders are more frequently found in gifted children, additional focus is given to these dual diagnoses of gifted children.

The Misdiagnosis of Gifted Children

Background story: In an informative and captivating DVD, SENG highlights the plight of children who are misdiagnosed with disorders such as ADHD or Asperger’s Syndrome. Misdiagnosis of gifted children is a widespread problem, but still largely unknown to healthcare professionals, educators, and parents. To protect our children from inappropriate diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment, and to promote their social and intellectual development, we must educate people about the potential for misinterpreting characteristics of giftedness as symptoms of pathology.
